Old Boys

Vintage Rugby

The Old Boys of the Denver Highlanders RFC are made up of over 200 quality individuals many still fairly (ahem) active. We regularly field sides to play around venues in North America as well as have an active social schedule. Our old boys group has still playing 60 year-old ruggers and welcomes all OB's from other clubs moving to town. We have regular social events and be assured that when you join the DHRFC Old Boys you don't have to be here for a long time, just a good time!

Celebrating the 40th Year of the Denver Highlanders

This summer will be a special one for our Old Boys as the club celebrates its 40th Anniversary with plans for a week long reunion in September. The celebration will ultimately end up in Aspen just in time for Ruggerfest, so if you are interested in hooking up with us there you might want to think about making some lodging arrangements (Ruggerfest runs from Sept. 18-21). If this is the first you have heard about this then I'd strongly suggest you get in touch with Scott Bredehoeft for all the details at your earliest convenience. The Old Boys will also be entering an over 35's side in this year's Ruggerfest, contact Nigel Smith or Craig Tarr if you are interested in taking the pitch for a chance to relive your glory years (see more details below ).

40th Anniversary Reunion Events Package

08/15/2008
The Highlander's 40th Anniversary Reunion is rapidly approaching; hopefully you've already been in contact with Scott Bredehoeft to place your RSVP to confirm your attendance at these gala events.

Scott has been working very hard at organizing the reunion events and has created an all-inclusive Reunion Package for your one-stop shopping pleasure. The package includes the following items:

  • Kegs on the sidelines for the Highlander's vs. Aspen match on Saturday, Sept. 13
  • A catered BBQ on Sunday, Sept. 14
  • The reunion banquet in Aspen on Friday, Sept. 19
  • Saturday morning kegs and Bloody Marys in Aspen on Sept. 20
  • A Highlanders 40th Anniversary golf shirt and ball cap

The cost for this events package is $125 per person. A portion of the package cost will be applied to cover tournament entry fees for the Highlander Old Boys, and also includes a complimentary autograph signing session with Scott Bredehoeft (by appointment only). Please note that this package does not include either the Rockies game on Sept. 15 or the golf tournament on the 17th.

If you have already signed up the reunion events, we ask you to please make your payment of $125 per person as soon as possible (so that Herr B does not have to continue carrying the entire cost on his rapidly diminishing line of credit). Please use the "Pay Now" button provided below to make your payment via credit card. Remember, the price is per person, so if you are paying for more than one person, please be sure to adjust the quantity accordingly when you get to the PayPal checkout page.

40th Reunion Golf Tournament

07/28/2008
The Old Boys will be chasing around little white balls and clubbing them mercilessly with metallic sticks on Wednesday, September 17th at the Park Hill Golf Course in Denver. Larry Kobilca has arranged for tee-times, carts, prizes, and a vast array of refreshing adult beverages for the bargain price of $27 per hacker. There are still a few spots available if you'd like to come and join the festivities, please contact Scott "PeeWee" Herman if you'd like to sign up. Did we mention free beer?

Old Boys Victorious in Elizabeth

07/28/2008

The Mighty Denver Highlander's Old Boys returned to action in fine fashion, besting a combined CSOB/Quins side by the score of 30 points to 20 at the Elizabeth Celtic Festival last weekend. It was a good warm up for our old buys as they continue their preparations for Ruggerfest. The clock is ticking and September will be here before you know it, so if you have any interest in participating at Aspen, now is the time to start turning out for "training" on Thursday evenings.

In Other OB News

Several Highlander Old Boys also participated in the 34th Annual Cowpie Classic at Steamboat Springs the weekend of July 12. In true "Rugby Ho'" fashion, Matt "Dragon" Stampfle and Clinton "Iron Man" Camp played 4 1/2 matches to help Vail gain a spot in the premier division finals where they were ultimately edged out by the defending Mountain League champions and tournament hosts, Steamboat Springs.

Paul "Hojon" Plvan returned to his roots and played in the OB's division for his old home town's Steamboat Desparado Rugby Football and Motorcycle Club (SDRF&MC). Hojon helped the Boat OB's defeat the CSOB's and play to a draw against Boulder's OB's before the SDRF&MC could finish them off in a post-game "boat race" to determine the winners.

The tightly contested tie-breaker was summed up in the following response from Hojon:

"Burp!"

Upcoming Old Boys Match at Elizabeth Celtic Festival

07/11/2008
The Old Boys will be playing against a combined CSOB/Harlequins side in an over 35's match on Sunday, July 20th. The match will be part of the 2008 Elizabeth Celtic Festival with the kickoff scheduled for 1:30 PM (see the festival website for a map and directions). Old Boys that wish to participate need to show up at the park by noon to get taped, greased, and apply liberal amounts of "Old Boy Warm Up" prior to the match (you might also strongly consider turning out for "training" next Thursday - 6:00, Village Greens Park - bring some PBR). Everyone is encouraged to come join the fun and cheer on our OB's as they continue preparing for their glorious return to the Ruggerfest.

The Celtic Festival hours are from 9 AM to 5 PM - the admission fees are as follows:

  • Adults (18 - 64) - $10
  • Teens (13 - 17) - $5
  • Seniors (65+) - $5
  • Parking - $2
  • Kids (12 and under) - Free

Old Boys Gearing Up for Ruggerfest

03/14/2008
Yes, we know that it is only mid-March. And yes, we are aware that Ruggerfest is still some 6 months off. But we also have an inkling that it might take that long for some of our esteemed alumni to shake off enough rust to not be totally humiliated when they take to the pitch in the highly competitive Over 35's bracket at this year's Ruggerfest.

With this in mind, the Old Boys will begin training at Jacob's Field each Thursday at 6:00 pm to run touch and progress into some form of practice in preparation for some games before Ruggerfest this year. We will meet after touch/practice at the City Pub South (southwest corner of Yosemite and Hampden) for a few frosty beverages.

At this time, we have the following Old Boys games tentatively scheduled this season:

  • April 5, 2008 against Boulder Old Boys 12:00 noon at Dicks Sporting Park (we may move this game to sometime in May depending on turnout)
  • July 20, 2008 against CSOB at the Elizabeth Celtic Festival (field location and time to be confirmed)
  • September 6, 2008 against a "tough, sprited, and fit opponent" (that has yet to be actually named by Nigel, let the rumors commence).

All DHRFC Old Boys out there that are either interested in attempting to re-live their glory days, or just to meet up and share lies about how great we all were back in the days before the new sissified law-book was introduced (remember when tries were only 4 points, boosting the lineout jumper was illegal, and it was okay to administer a well placed boot in the ruck?), are encouraged to turn out. If you are interested in playing, please contact Nigel Smith or Craig Tarr and get your name added to the roster if you have not already done so.

Our entry in this year's tournament is just a part of the Highlander's 40th Anniversary Celebration planned for the week of Ruggerfest. All current and former Highlanders are invited to join us for the festivities, please contact Scott Bredehoeft for more details. A reunion dinner is being planned in Aspen for the evening of Sept. 19th and Scott needs to get a head-count of those that will be attending as soon as possible, so if you could at least get him a heads-up if you plan on attending the dinner it would be greatly appreciated. Other events are also being planned for the week-long reunion (Rockies game, golf tournament, etc) and further details will be posted here as they become available. Please note that if you are planning to join us at Ruggerfest (Sept. 18-21) you need to make your lodging arrangements as soon as you can - the place fills up early and the club will not be booking any rooms for this event.
